1919 Ford Model T Touring [Down On The Street]

Welcome to Down On The Street, where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. We're going to end 2008 with the oldest DOTS car yet.

How about 89 years old and parked on the street? Granted, this West End car doesn't live full-time on the street, but every so often it spends a few days doing so, along with its 1924 garagemate. At that point it's used to run errands, go grocery shopping, and so on, though it seldom leaves the island and its 25 MPH speed limits. The owner is a regular Jalopnik reader, and he agreed to let me know the next time his old Fords would be getting some street time.

Got to love the uncomplicated controls. Ignition switch and ammeter. Period. The Model T was 11 years old by 1919, and old Henry- in between foamy-mouthed fulminations on the Elders Of Zion- was working double-time to get costs down. You could get the '19 Touring for just $525, or about $6,500 in today's bucks (the '08 model went for $850). And hey, this was the first year of the electric starter, so broken wrists became optional!

Ford F150 Named Motor Trend's 2009 Truck of the Year

2009_ford_f150_mt.jpg
Motor Trend has announced the recipient of its 2009 Truck of the Year award and this year the redesigned 2009 Ford F150 receives the award.

This year there were only 4 contenders for the award, the Ford F150, also redesigned Dodge Ram, Suzuki Equator and HUMMER H3T. Basically the choice for Motor Trend's editors was between the F150 and Ram since the Equator is basically a rebadged Nissan Frontier and well the H3T is....you fill in the blank.

Editors praised the new F150 for having low noise levels and high interior quality materials. Other standouts were the new features like the Tailgate Step, Box Side Step, and a stowable bed-extender helped the F150 receive the award.

Consumer Reports Places the Ford Flex and Mazda CX-9 in Top 5 Three-Row SUVs

2009_ford_flex_blue.jpg
Yesterday Ford announced that the slow-selling 2009 Ford Flex would have an available $2,500 rebate to help move them off the lots. The Mazda CX-9 has also failed to reach the top in sales either, but Consumer Reports has announced that both vehicles are one of the top five three-row SUVs they tested.

“Ford’s new Flex wraps a versatile, cavernous interior in a distinctly boxy styling,” the magazine writes. “It is also lower and more wagon-like than the others in this class.”

Ford Strives to Make a Profit on Small Cars

2009_ford_fiesta_gn.jpg
For years automakers have claimed that small cars equal small profits, which explains their focus on bigger more profitable vehicles. Well now that large vehicles are out, automakers are trying to go small without killing their profits. Ford is hoping that its new "global" Focus will deliver double digit percentage profit improvements compared to the current US-spec Focus.

Honda Civic Outsells the Camry, F-150 and Corolla in May

2008.honda.civic.mugen.si.sedan_new.jpeg
Gas prices are so insane right now and car buyers are finally realizing they can't afford to drive those huge gas guzzlers anymore. The F-150 has been the best selling vehicle in the US for decades, but its reign at the top is soon over. Last month it moved down to the number five spot behind the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.

2007 Detroit Auto Show: 2008 Ford Five Hundred

2008fordfivehundred

Ford’s poorly received Five Hundred sedan gets a face-lift and much-needed new engine and transmission for 2008. Unfortunately, it also retains a similar — and quite lackluster — interior compared to the previous model. You’ll immediately notice the new grille, which mirrors both the Ford Fusion sedan and Edge SUV. It’s well done, but the overall redesign is far less significant than the ‘08 Focus.

Under the hood, the front-wheel-drive Five Hundred finally packs a worthy punch with a 3.5-liter V-6 pumping out 260 hp, paired with a six-speed automatic that replaces the CVT in the outgoing model.

By addressing just two of the car’s three glaring faults, Ford has almost done right by the Five Hundred, but we’re not sure if it’s enough to get the job done.

Mercury Sable dies along with Taurus X

Next month Ford is expected to unveil the all new 2010 Ford Taurus at the Detroit Auto Show, but don't expect the large sedan to be accompanied by a new Mercury Sable. Ford spokesman Mark Schirmer told Automotive News that the spacious sedan will take a dirt nap in April, one month after the Taurus X drives off into the sunset. The Sable never did make inroads with customers despite of its unoffensive sheet metal, smooth ride, and spotless safety ratings, and sales are down 20% for the year through November. Schirmer stated that part of the reason for the Sable's departure was that Ford was readying itself for lower industry volume levels, which makes multiple nameplates more difficult to justify. Dealers will need to order their last Sables by March 6th, and production comes to a halt on April 30. In a letter to dealers, Ford stated that it was discontinuing the Sable to "have a laser sharp focus on delivering the products that consumers want the most." Fair enough.

We never quite understood why the Sable performed as poorly as it did. The Sable was no standard bearer, mind you, but even the Grand Marquis regularly kicked the Sable's arse on the sales charts. And it's been around since Jimmy Carter was president.

Speculation Mounts that Jaguar/Land Rover Sale is Unlikely in 2007

Jaguar symbol

That Jaguar symbol may look as though it is moving fast but that is no indication of the speed with which Ford will be able to unload the Jaguar and Land Rover brands. That is the speculation coming from Topspeed and could very well be the concern of Fords Board of Directors, along with Ford’s President Alan Mulally.

Mulally expressed doubt that the credit volatility of world markets would slow down the sale of Jaguar and/or Land Rover. However there are very few indications coming from the mouth-pieces of Ford nor any interested buyers that the case is otherwise.

Topspeed further intimates that the effects of the uncertain credit markets in North America and Europe could open the door for other interested parties not effected by international credit. Namely, Russia and China may yet have a buyer step forward that might be looking to expand their own brands into other markets and could use an affiliation with Jaguar or Land Rover as a stepping stone.

The only thing that seems certain at this point is that we are sure to hear more on this topic in the months or year to come.

Our best guesses about what the 2010 Mercury Milan and 2010 Ford Fusion would look like have been all-but-confirmed by a set of spy photos Automobile has just released. The shots show the twin of the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid running around without a stitch of camouflage. Though not as dramatic as we'd hoped, it is clearly a step forward from the rather dull vehicle it is replacing. "But did anyone ever make a Fox Ford Ferrari kit?" you might be asking, ...

Welcome to Project Car Hell, where you choose your eternity by selecting the project that's the coolest... and the most hellish! Yesterday, we were not quite shocked to see the backyard-turbo'd VW GTI obliterate the rod-knockitty Toyota FX16 by a 76:24 margin in the Choose Your Eternity poll. Today we're going to consider the Fauxrrari, and- just to make it more interesting- we're not considering Fiero-based cars. That's right, no Fierraris!

You've got your Fauxrraris based on Fieros, or Corvettes, or 280Zs, or even Mitsubishi Eclipses. But say you want the reliability and VTEC power of a Honda product in your Fauxrrari? Sure, sure, it's front-wheel drive, and maybe that makes a Ferronda even more of an abomination in the eyes of Ferrari purists, but horrifying the purists to the point where they have to start dumping extra anisetta shots in their espresso just to maintain the will to live… well, that's why we're here, isn't it? Of course it is, and that's just one of many excellent reasons for you to purchase this 1994 Acura Integra with 'Ferrari F430 conversion' (go here if the ad disappears), which sports a totally reasonable asking price of a mere $2,500. The seller says "everything on car is perfect," but then his or her ironclad sense of honesty compels the following semi-disturbing qualification: "its stalling MILDLY on 2345 gear and when on 60mph wont let me go higher its not tranny cuz wen in neutral i press gas and it struggles so it might be senors or m.a.p sensor which online is 70$." You see? The stalling is mild; get a new MAP sensor and it's good to go! Of course, you'll need to jack up the horsepower to Ferrari standards, so that you'll be able to torque steer your way into the nearest ditch justify that fine, fine pure Bondo bodywork, which means adding turbocharging and intercooling until the combustion chambers are hotter than the surface of the sun.

You could definitely have some fun in an Integrrari, since it would actually be pretty quick and all, but the Fierrari guys will point to your front-wheel burnouts and laugh and you can't have that! If you're going to spend the staggering sum of several thousand bucks on a Fauxrrari, it's got to be rear-wheel-drive, right? What you're looking for, my budget-minded supercar-seeking friend, is a genuine Mustrrari, built on Ford's protean Fox platform. When you've got a Fox, every junkyard in North America will seem like a comprehensively stocked superstore to you, and you want cheap aftermarket performance parts? Whooo-EEEE! You can turn a Fox into a 200 MPH deathtrap performance machine for nickels and dimes, my friend, nickels… and… dimes! "But did anyone ever make a Fox Ford Ferrari kit?" you might be asking, and it turns out the answer to that question is definitely a big 10-4, with this yellow Mustrrari (go here if the ad disappears) as the proof. We don't know the year of the chassis (in fact, it might not even be a Fox, though that's the way to bet), and we don't know the engine size, transmission type, nor anything else of any value to potential buyers, since the seller doesn't wish to divulge that sensitive information in the Craigslist ad. All we know is that "someone just needs to go over the body again, fix the engine, and 'freshen' everything up." How hard could it be?

Which Fauxrrari shall it be?
( surveys)
