Consumer Reports Places the Ford Flex and Mazda CX-9 in Top 5 Three-Row SUVs

2009_ford_flex_blue.jpg
Yesterday Ford announced that the slow-selling 2009 Ford Flex would have an available $2,500 rebate to help move them off the lots. The Mazda CX-9 has also failed to reach the top in sales either, but Consumer Reports has announced that both vehicles are one of the top five three-row SUVs they tested.

“Ford’s new Flex wraps a versatile, cavernous interior in a distinctly boxy styling,” the magazine writes. “It is also lower and more wagon-like than the others in this class.”

2009 Mazda RX-8

No matter how many times that little kid might have whispered, “Zoom Zoom” on T.V., there has been an upper-end performance vacuum at Mazda since the plug was pulled on the RX-7. Regardless of what Mazda might say about its performance, when the first 2009 RX-8s arrive at dealers, the most important upgrade customers will find is not in its horsepower, but in its warranty.

For years Rotary engines have lived and died by the stories that have circulated about its durability. A retired Mazda mechanic once told me that in the early 90’s he was able to “coax” back into operation (with a crowbar) a Rotary engine that had seized from a faulty oil pump. He called it a “bullet proof” engine. However, the fact that very few used RX-7’s are still on the road with their original engine doesn’t seem to give much credence to that story.  Now, in an effort to demonstrate the engine’s reliability, Mazda is retroactively covering the unique engine in all 2004 and newer RX-8’s for eight years and 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. The rest of the powertrain warranty remains at five years/60,000 miles.

Unchanged for 2009 is the 232-hp, 1.3-liter Rotary engine that gets a rather paltry 22 mpg on the highway and 16 mpg in the city. Mazda is, however, beefing up the RX-8’s driving dynamics with the addition of a new R3 sport package which adds a sport-tuned suspension with Bilstein shock absorbers and front suspension crossmembers filled with urethane foam. Filling the crossmembers with this material makes for a smoother ride and greater suspension control. Also, the rear suspension geometry has been reconfigured for better handling performance and driveshaft rigidity, improving performance. To see the RX-8 on the track check out the BBC’s s Top Gear, which gives it a surprisingly favorable review.

On the visual side of the package, a rear spoiler, side sills, fog lights and aggressively-styled front bumper are added to give the RX-8 a more menacing appearance, along with 19-inch forged aluminum-alloy wheels with high performance tires. Inside, the R3 adds a 300-watt BOSE® audio system, Bluetooth hands-free phone system, front Recaro sport seats with leather side bolsters, leather-wrapped parking brake handle and Mazda advanced keyless entry and start system. The two plus two suicide doors layout will also be preserved for the second generation RX-8 as well. Additionally, a variable red-zone was added to the tachometer that rises as the engine comes to operating temperature. The RX-8 is priced between $26,435 and $31, 930.

Mazda Lineup Growing, Advertising Not Catching Up

Cx9andcx7

We just finished reading AutoWeek’s story on Mazda’s expanding lineup — moving from seven nameplates to nine in two years and adding six more bodystyles in the same timeframe — and we’re a bit dismayed that the company isn’t planning on expanding ad buying in the same proportions.

Here’s where we dissect some of the industry speak for you. Mazda’s new director of marketing David Klan isn’t planning on highlighting the new CX-7 and CX-9 crossovers over the rest of the lineup despite their positive reviews and brisk sales of the CX-7. He went the understated route, saying “the crossovers are a natural extension of the brand.” Sounds like a politician or losing quarterback who can only say one thing, no matter what the topic is.

The point is the CX-7 and CX-9 are probably the most important vehicles to hit Mazda’s lineup since the Mazda6.

Some knew to go to Mazda for sportier versions of the economy sedan — Mazda 3 — or an open top roadster value — the MX-5 Miata — but families with kids most likely aren’t considering Mazda. The new CX-9 is tailor made for SUV, minivan and crossover shoppers looking for something different and they’ll probably never stop at a Mazda dealership if they don’t see some commercials.

AutoWeek points out the similarities to the company’s previous expansion in the 1980s and 1990s but doesn’t point out that those cars had more quality problems than these recent models, which didn’t help matters. Mazda’s attachment to the Zoom-Zoom tagline and its middle of the road commercials will probably maintain the status quo. We just wish Mazda tried something a little different, at least as different as its products.

Mazda Say They Will Delight Us With RX-8 RS

Mazda RX-8 RS

Mazda is ready to unveil a new version of RX-8 model. They called it RX-8 RS . The unveiling is programmed for Tokyo Auto Salon and the car is supposed to be an upgrade for the RX-8 which can be seen at Detroit Auto Show this week. There is no way that you cannot observe the new taillights and the spoiler, also you should notice bigger air intakes and the 19-inch rims which draws everybody’s attention. Mazda didn’t want to disclose any other information so we have to wait for technical details. Until then you can guess what surprises they can line out.

LA 2008: 2010 Mazda3 shows its smiling face [w/VIDEO]

Click above for high-res image gallery of the 2010 Mazda3 sedan

Mazda has unveiled its 2010 Mazda3 sedan here at the LA Auto Show and we managed to snap some nice shots off as it was spinning around on a huge rotating stand. It's a good looking car that Mazda says carries on its "family face" with stylish bulges and creases that attract the eyes, and we're really looking forward to seeing the hatchback version as well. Underhood is a newly-enlarged 2.5-liter version of Mazda's MZR inline-four that offers up 167-horsepower and can be mated to either a 6-speed stick or 5-speed auto. As before, a standard 148-horsepower 2.0L four will be available and can be had with either a manual or auto tranny with 5 forward ratios each.

Considering the low price class in which the Mazda3 competes, features like dual-zone automatic climate control, Xenon self-leveling head lamps, push-button start and hands-free Bluetooth are very nice touches, as is the iPod integration and an optional leather interior. Increasingly important these days is fuel mileage, so the 3's low .29 coefficient of drag is an important piece of the overall efficiency puzzle and helps the 2010 Mazda3 hit 33 mpg on the highway with the smaller engine option. See the full press release past the break for all the details and be sure to check out our live shots below.
