Plug-In Toyota Prius Will Average 65 MPG in 2010

Toyota unveiled the all-new 2010 Toyota Prius at the Detroit Auto Show last month. Initially the new Prius will only be offered with the current nickel-metal hydride batteries, but sometime in 2010 a plug-in Prius will be introduced.

According to Bill Reinert, Toyota Motor Sales USA’s national alternative-fuel vehicle manager, the Prius plug-in hybrid has been averaging 65 mpg in combined gas and electic mode testing.

“That is real-world driving,” Reinert told Automotive News. “I ask my guys to drive them as you drive your normal Prius.”

The non plug-in hybrid 2010 Prius gets an estimated combined 50 mpg.

What’s Next: Racing is Going Green

It probably shouldn’t bother me, but I tend to get kind of steamed when people tell me racing is boring. Seriously, there are people out there who will make that statement, and then in the next breath, start talking about how awesome watching soccer is. Obviously, these people are insane. But what really pisses me off is when folks start whining about how “wasteful” auto racing is, because the fact of the matter is that a lot of the technology that makes road cars safer and more efficient comes from lessons learned on the grid. Two quick cases in point? Well, the American Le Mans Series recently launched the Green Challenge, a set of rules designed to encourage the use of environmentally friendly technology, and NASCARs are already running on E85. 2010 Mercury Milan Hybrid Caught Completely, Embarassingly Naked [2010 Mercury Milan Hybrid]

Our best guesses about what the 2010 Mercury Milan and 2010 Ford Fusion would look like have been all-but-confirmed by a set of spy photos Automobile has just released. The shots show the twin of the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid running around without a stitch of camouflage. Though not as dramatic as we'd hoped, it is clearly a step forward from the rather dull vehicle it is replacing. We'll see new Milan, Fusion and MKZ, and their futuristic gauge cluster at the LA Auto Show. In the meantime, enjoy our spy photos and drawings below.
