Snitches Get Scorchings: NY Teen Attempts To Set 14-Year-Old Ablaze

In Nassau, New York, 18-year old Matthew Taylor was arrested on Wednesday after attempting to set fire to a 14-year-old who had accused him of “snitching”. According to Newsday, Taylor cornered the 14-year-old [whose name has not been released] in an apartment building and proceeded to douse him with gasoline he had been carrying in a 20 oz plastic bottle. Taylor then attempted to set the boy on fire using both a cigarette lighter and a road flare, but was unable to produce a spark.

Soaked with accelerant, the 14-year-old fled the apartment building and sought safety at his grandmother’s house down the street, but Taylor gave chase. When the boy reached his grandmother’s house he immediately told her what had happened, and as his grandmother quickly guided him to the shower, Taylor threw gasoline on her door.

Although the finer details of the events that led up to the incident were not divulged, authorities did reveal that both boys had been suspended from school the day prior after becoming involved in a physical altercation. School authorities would not comment on the matter, but the root cause of the skirmish seems to be an allegation made by the 14-year-old that Taylor had “snitched” on his cousin.

Currently, Taylor is being held on $25,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday to face the charges levied against him which include first-degree reckless endangerment, fourth-degree possession of a dangerous weapon, and endangering the welfare of a child. The 14-year-old was treated for chemical burns at Winthrop University Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

Motorist Caught In British Parking Lot Encouraged To “Get A Room”

Spoiler Alert: it’s not as dirty as it sounds. In London, private parking lot security company Parking Eye has come under fire for issuing non-criminal parking tickets to motorists who have overstayed there welcome. While such conduct is usually simply operating procedure, Parking Eye has faced a torrent of criticism because they give no public indication that the lots are under a time restriction - or that they’re being monitored. According to the Daily Express, Londoner Emma Faulkner was downright outraged when she received her ticket from Private Eye in the mail.

Apparently, while making a late-night trip from London to Presten, Lancaster, Emma found herself nodding off behind the wheel. Hoping to catch a quick nap and prevent a fatal disaster, Emma pulled into a nearby parking lot and caught a few hours sleep. About a week later, she received a $100 ticket in the mail for overstaying the 2-hour parking limit. “I didn’t see any sign saying only two hours,” explained Emma, “I’m genuinely horrified. They are always on about safe driving and having a break if you are feeling tired. They surely can’t expect you to book into a hotel room for four-and-a-half hours?” Apparently, they do, and if you can’t afford one, you better be prepared for a ticket. Fortunately, Private Eye and many other private security firms like it are dispensing their own brand of justice, which doesn’t hold the same weight as official government regulations. Motorist rights protection group roadsidelawyer.com stresses this to its members, warning that any document demanding the payment of fees is not legally binding unless issued by the government. The private companies are aware of this too, and threaten civil action if the balance is not paid in full. Dismissive of the bullying tactics, a spokesperson from roadsidelawyer.com explained, “The standard procedure is for them to huff and puff a lot and churn out an endless stream of letters talking of imminent legal proceedings. The reality is that letters are cheap and taking you to court?is expensive.”

2009 Mazda RX-8

No matter how many times that little kid might have whispered, “Zoom Zoom” on T.V., there has been an upper-end performance vacuum at Mazda since the plug was pulled on the RX-7. Regardless of what Mazda might say about its performance, when the first 2009 RX-8s arrive at dealers, the most important upgrade customers will find is not in its horsepower, but in its warranty.

For years Rotary engines have lived and died by the stories that have circulated about its durability. A retired Mazda mechanic once told me that in the early 90’s he was able to “coax” back into operation (with a crowbar) a Rotary engine that had seized from a faulty oil pump. He called it a “bullet proof” engine. However, the fact that very few used RX-7’s are still on the road with their original engine doesn’t seem to give much credence to that story.  Now, in an effort to demonstrate the engine’s reliability, Mazda is retroactively covering the unique engine in all 2004 and newer RX-8’s for eight years and 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. The rest of the powertrain warranty remains at five years/60,000 miles.

Unchanged for 2009 is the 232-hp, 1.3-liter Rotary engine that gets a rather paltry 22 mpg on the highway and 16 mpg in the city. Mazda is, however, beefing up the RX-8’s driving dynamics with the addition of a new R3 sport package which adds a sport-tuned suspension with Bilstein shock absorbers and front suspension crossmembers filled with urethane foam. Filling the crossmembers with this material makes for a smoother ride and greater suspension control. Also, the rear suspension geometry has been reconfigured for better handling performance and driveshaft rigidity, improving performance. To see the RX-8 on the track check out the BBC’s s Top Gear, which gives it a surprisingly favorable review.

On the visual side of the package, a rear spoiler, side sills, fog lights and aggressively-styled front bumper are added to give the RX-8 a more menacing appearance, along with 19-inch forged aluminum-alloy wheels with high performance tires. Inside, the R3 adds a 300-watt BOSE® audio system, Bluetooth hands-free phone system, front Recaro sport seats with leather side bolsters, leather-wrapped parking brake handle and Mazda advanced keyless entry and start system. The two plus two suicide doors layout will also be preserved for the second generation RX-8 as well. Additionally, a variable red-zone was added to the tachometer that rises as the engine comes to operating temperature. The RX-8 is priced between $26,435 and $31, 930.

New York 2008: Kia Koup Concept Sparks Interest

kiakoupconcept-3.jpg picture by willfusion

Wait, wait, wait… Do not turn away just yet! This is not your typical little Kia submission for concept consideration. For once less dismiss the hyperbole and cut straight to the numbers. Beneath the tiny candy-coated shell of this singular little Koup would be Kia’s new 2.0 liter Thetta II turbo-charged engine, with direct injection and built in cooled intake, that pumps out an impressive 290-hp and 289-ft lbs of torque. No, those are not big power numbers in the grand scheme of things, but for a small, two-door Kia that kind of output is an aggressive statement.

Whether or not Kia’s intent for the wedge-shaped design was to inditacate their intention to insert themselves into the small-car market by force, their Koup appears poised to go head-to-head with any other cars in the destined segment. The large grill opening and extra two air-ports on both sides of the grill is meant to indicate that the Koup’s powerful engine needs room to breath. And Kia’s race inspired interior gives the indication that this car is built for spirited driving, while also looking production ready.

The best compliment for the Kia Koupe concept’s design is that it appears complete from front to back. The headlights and taillights carry a similar form and wrap around appearance, and the sleek curves of the body carry from front to back without losing their liquid-like flow. While the exhaust port-holes emerging from a carbon-fiber surround with its row of air fins seems unlikely to make it clear to production, we would recommend that Kia maintain that appearance with at least black plastic if this car survives its concept stage. This car looks road ready and if the mechanics and engineering are there to support the appearance what a great challenger to the Honda Civic Si you could have here.   …Check out the full gallery of photos and official Press Release from Kia after the leap… (more…)

BMW 1-Series Marketing Comes to America

bmw135i.jpg picture by willfusion

BMW marketing is ushering in the arrival of the 1-Series to the America’s and that should make a lot of people very happy. The 135i is one of the most highly anticipated car introductions of 2008 and is sure to spend very limited time on any dealers lot. For those curious and eager buyers looking to get their hands on one ahead of the pack so far there is only a 1-Series BMW Manual for sale on ebay, but it will not be long before someone will be looking to cash in on a premium and high demand for the car.

If you are looking to make an early splash in the 1-Series market then you may want to contact your local BMW dealership. Odds are there may already be a pre-order or 2 ahead of you.

The marketing campaign begun by BMW is that the 1-Series, and in-particular the 135i, will bring color to an all pale-white world. With 300 horses under the hood the appearance of color must be from all the blood rushing to your head, but that is just my own speculation.

Follow the link to the next page to catch a glimpse of the new BMW 1-Series commercial. Might as well get used to it now, because you are likely to be seeing a lot of it. (more…)

Win a 2007 Lincoln MKX crossover

How would you like to own a brand new pearl white, 2007 Lincoln MKX crossover? The answer would be a most definite yes from most people and why not!

red cross

The only problem is that you would need to be in Minnesota and entry will cost you a pint of blood! Because this is a promotion (If you can call it that) being organized by the Red Cross. Last week the supplies of blood began to run down significantly and in fact the type “O” blood group had almost entirely gone, with no foreseeable way of replenishing their stocks, the Red Cross have decided to resort to shall we say, some unorthodox ways of persuading people to donate a little bit of the red stuff.

It is good way of getting people to walk in the door, in fact the campaign has been running for three weeks now and over 13,000 have visited the Red Cross centers in the hope of being able to drive around in a new car on September 8th when the campaign will give away the prizes.

If the prospect of winning the brand new car was not enough, in the American Red Cross of Southeastern Michigan, also have fuels cards of varying values from $25 right up to $200.

This is for sure a great way of bringing in the people and educating them on the importance of donating blood, however will the donors become regular donors? It has to be doubtful, so organizing a great campaign like this has short term benefits, but this is not a long term solution unless the Red Cross is prepared to giveaway a major prize every one or two months.

This current campaign will end on September 5th.

Checking your cars computer goes self-serve with SAM Kiosks

Car Computer ReaderCommunicating with your cars onboard computer has just been taken out of the hands of the trained professional mechanic and made available to anyone (currently living in Atlanta and North Carolina). For years we have paid fees to our mechanic for hooking up our cars to a Code Reader to tell us what was wrong with our cars. Each time they plug our car in it costs us anywhere from $25 to $85 or more in fees charged by the mechanic. With the Smart Auto Management (SAM) kiosk you can pull up and check your computer yourself just like you pump your own gas (just a different receptical… please do not put scanning port in your fuel spout).

Handheld scanners have been around for years too and are quite the convenience if you know how to work one and want to pay the money for the code/software updates. For many of us the need to read our cars computer is random and not something many want to be trained to do. By pulling up to a SAM kiosk and for a simple charge of $15 on your credit card you can learn on your own what that knocking noise is or why your check engine light is on. This also takes the guessing game out of going to the mechanic as now you are coming to him with your specific need and not waiting on him to tell you what he is going to do for you.

Other reasons to use a SAM kiosk could be to check your car before heading out on that long drive or when purchasing a used car. A couple years ago I requested to have a used 2003 Mustang GT Convertible hooked up to the computer before I bought it. It was not that I didn’t trust the dealership (never do). It was just that I did not want any surprises after buying the car. Their response was a bit of a scoff at my request and that it really would only tell me if there was a problem with the car (duh) and that there was no problem with the car. Then they also told me that it would cost me $85. If a SAM kiosk had been around there is a strong likelihood that my test drive of the vehicle would have involved a trip to the kiosk to get a reading on the car myself. It would be just one more way to protect yourself. Watch for the opening of a SAM kiosk near you in the coming year. Currently there are 200 in Atlanta and NC, but their plans are to go nationwide.

Chrysler’s Confessions of Flops Not Meant for Public Consumption

On Friday, June 6th, The Detroit News printed a story concerning an internal Question and Answer session between a small group within the Chrysler Corporation and the Corporate Chiefs. The Q&A session was intended to respond to the disquiet among employees over Chrysler’s current products and their harsh reviews by Consumer Reports and other auto professionals. The results of the session were some strong criticisms and confessions from the top and a plan for some vital changes.

chrysler sebring When questioned directly about the poor performance of the new 2007 models, particularly the Sebring and Dodge Nitro, Bob Lee, head of power train engineering, wrote that they had “missed where the market was to end up versus our projections.”  Lee also noted that the CEO’s of Chrysler were “quite upset” with performance and miscalculations of their new cars. Jose Valcourt of The Detroit News summed it up this way:

“Chrysler underestimated competitors, set standards too low in some areas and was not where it needed to be in areas such as fuel economy, interior quality, and limiting noise and vibration.”

dodge nitro chryslerIn response to all the unflattering critiques of the new cars for 2007 Chrysler has devised a plan of action. One of the actions to take place will be the hiring of ASI Consulting Group to work with them on improving their design in regards to the customers needs. Chrysler also vowed to alter the strategies by which they gauge the market and their competitors plans for the coming years. Their concern is how much the missed the mark in their expectations for the other auto makers releases of this year. In terms of fuel efficiency, interior quality and their response to customer complaints Chrysler has lagged behind their automotive counterparts. If it were not for a few redesigns that hit-the-mark, like the new Jeep Wrangler, Chrysler were be heading for another rocky year.

It seems the traditional Big Three of the Automotive Industry have been playing follow the leader in a pitch dark warehouse for so long they may have forgotten they were designing cars for the Consumer. How they have remained ignorant of the needs of improved fuel efficiency or what those needs are is beyond comprehension. Only time will tell if their renewed Commitment to Excellence brings Chrysler back from the brink as Lee Iacocca did decades ago.
